"I
first stood as an Independent Candidate for the Scottish Parliament in 2007, tae warn The Scottish Borders that we were going tae lose all our Local banks. This would ; and has;seriously affected the Borders Towns and villages economies and further drive away young people . The future of The Scottish Borders is it's young people ,and it was important tae me that if they wanted tae return and bring up their own families here, then The Scottish Borders has tae be a place of opportunity ,work and wealth. I had ;and have a plan for this tae happen"
1.
How I am going tae help Borders Youth ,is a plan I have had since 2006. Every guid Idea I have had,had been stolen or 'borrowed' by other people as soon as I have opened my mouth. My mouth stays shut till after May 6th.
2.
Protecting the Doctors Surgery in Newtown St Boswells,is something I have tae dae. We are not Melrose, and that is another Community altogether. I was against the closure of St.Boswells Surgery, and I'm certainly going tae prevent Newtown Surgery shutting. We owe it tae the Elderly and local people especially Mums and bairns, where they can walk tae for treatment. Bus services are not an option intae the far future ,since they are struggling right now. A lot of elderly residents cannot or are unable tae drive. There is no pharmacy in St..Boswells. Shutting Eildon General Practice ,and saving the Pharmacy ( yet another shop) frae closingIf elected or not, I will not let this happen.Ye dinnae shut local health services and something as vital as this ,when new houses are being built and the population is expanding.
3.
Free parking right across The Scottish Borders with no conditions. This is not an option. Local workers, visitors and Tourists should not be penalised for going aboot their business and leaving their vehicle in a safe place and close at hand with no charges or penalty charges associated.. We don't have the population density of a Major City like Edinburgh, and I don't agree with the councils attitude in that area, either where a lot of Border workers have tae travel tae. Making money frae parking , belongs in the past and we need tae have a more helpful, considerate approach here in this Rural part of Scotland, where people have tae use their own form of transport getting to and from work. New parking bays HAVE tae be put in place that are clearly marked for Motor Homes ,camper vans and buses now...so we are visitor friendly. Other areas don't have enough either in Scotland and use them as money machines. We need tae help in the Scottish Borders, and in turn make it easier for a Rural Economy tae thrive under its own steam and with remarks seemingly put on Tourist information Social Media, make the Scottish Borders as accessible in reputation as its Friendliness. The two gaun taegether.
4.No
Double Lines or One Way Systems. Firstly; in reverse; I have two things tae say aboot this. One Way systems. If ye have ever visited a place by car that you have never seen before, and ye spot a shop that ye would like tae visit ,how many of ye reading this, have been in the situation of already being whisked past it in the flow of a One Way system, having not being able tae park outside because of yellow lines, and Nae parking. You might have considered going All the way round a Toon just tae come back again for it. Chances are; if yer like me; wi' the hoo ha of busy traffic...ye give up,and the One Way has taken ye completely oot o' the Toon altaegether. If ye look carefully at who these One Way systems benefit, ye would nae be wrong in concluding that has been done for The new Supermarkets and large Retailers. Oh and yes, they have a abundance o' free parking spaces. Tourists want tae visit 'local shops that reflect the character of the place,No Supermarkets ,so they must be able tae stop outside and shop. Visitors apart frae farmers dae'n a monthly shop ,Need this.Even if it means going around the roundabout at the end of the street, and coming back ,you are depriving them of making the effort. And tell me ,Who is going tae bother opening a' these empty shops again UNLESS ye do away wi' this crazy mentality. If I was even considering opening a high street ShopI wouldn't even think aboot it if ye could nae park ootside the door just tae pop in for a few items. No disrespect tae blue badge owners, but we a' need that here in the Borders.
Now,..The Removal of a' double yellow lines.EXCEPT for residential access AND Emergency Access. An unbroken 'yellow brick road' is a most threatening and inviting prospect for out o' town Visitors. We must make an effort tae make onstreet parking spaces with gaps in this Yellow Hell. On both sides of the street. All these changes are easily and cheaply done with a paint brush and a big pot o' black paint. Ye dinnae need Millions for Centre o'Town 'rejuvenation' Which leads me tae where a' this is going tae be possible, and what the money should be spent on. We are going tae have a revolution . I talked aboot this back in 2007 when I first stood as an Independent at the Hustings in Duns and Selkirk. The creation o' Traffic Attendants. 4 tae six for every Toon, 2 tae 3 every Village 1 for small Villages. Local people young and old with a good knowledge of the Borders, patrolling the streets on foot tae help the Elderly and visitors park on the street, keep the traffic flowing through narrow streets, supervise large lorries and Agricultural machinery safe passage and act as a friendly 'guid ' for accommodation and historical places tae visit. VERY IMPORTANTLY...they do not have the powers tae fine people. Uniquely and colourfully kitted out in a distinct smart uniform with collar and tie designed by a local Textiles Students. This is the magic ingredient tae making this a' possible. Employment for both young and old ,that is the oil tae making this machinery work and these proposals possible, and bringing oor local shops back and the opportunity of opening new ones. I would appreciate yer support on May 6th if ye agree that ye like these ideas and ye want tae see oor village traders and shops be given a real chance.
5.Save
a' Local Shops. Take'n these actions should make it possible. An extensive time allowed by Scottish Borders Council with relaxation of rates would help get things established.
6.
Open a Bank Branch in every Village and Toon. This is a biggie, but when I first stood as an MSP Candidate in 2007,it was tae warn ye that this was going tae happen in the Scottish Borders, and of course naebody listened. Now in 2021, we know, I know how I can bring a major Bank Branch back again ;that is cash friendly;until such time as we set up oor ain Borders Bank with its base in a Ettrick Roxburgh and Berwickshire. Fortunately I made a 35 DVD Body O' Audio Visual performance Work Commisioned by Grizedale Arts which I performed in The USA,Liverpool and Tate Britain, Which I'm sure will persuade them tae return tae just the Borders,be it not the rest o' Scotland .
7.

8. Every School in The Scottish Borders tae have their own Automated Community TV and Radio Station. I thought Broadcasting oot tae yer whole surrounding Community ,a' by yer sels ..was amaz'n.I think yer the most talented young people in the World . The new School age generation is tae have this permanently now. Not tae interfere wi the Curriculum ,but install confidence as an outlet for expressing yer talents . Securing Household Coal and Wood for the 12000 customers ;tae date ; in Ettrick Roxburgh and Berwickshire that depend on their heating and cooking in the Borders using domestic coal and wood supply for the next 20 years. As technology improves and if it takes less time for a suitable transition tae a greener solution that can still supply the same energy and heat, but at a cheaper price and paid by The Scottish Government for all conversion costs ,that will b considered here in The Scottish Borders. Coal production gasses;when mined ;can be captured ,solidified and buried now, but until the will by Government tae use that technology is activated,I have been instructed on the practical working plans on how we can continue importing coal supply ,grading and distributing tae customers that depend on its vital , domestic supply throughout the Borders. A proportion of Electricity supply frae Private Wind farm Companies will be directed tae supply local communities free of charge that have tae endure these structures imposed on their Communities skyline instead of going directly intae the National Grid. This can help speed up the process.
THE
CLAYMORE CUP FOR CHILDREN'S RUGBY
In 2001 I presented Jim Telfer with the Claymore Cup ; a beautiful large Cup with a claymore engraving, made by Blair the Jeweller in Kelso; which became 'JIM TELFER'S CLAYMORE CUP for kids aged between 5 and 7 years of age. We were too far ahead then ,but Mr Telfer has agreed that we need tae start small children playing Scottish Borders Rugby again in 2021. Health and exercise as never been more important than now,but ball handling skills must be developed at a very young age if we are tae make the National Team Rugby World Cup Champions. This beautiful Cup is tae start it all off, and famous Scottish Borders Rugby Players will kick it off This is the new beginning, and I am sae proud tae be part of it.
